Whether you're hardcore into environmental studies or have simply always dreamed of diving the Great Barrier Reef, James Cook University may be your ideal study abroad locale. The University offers encompasses two campuses in Tropical North Queensland: one campus in Townsville (11,000 students) and another in Cairns (3,000 students). Both are within easy reach of numerous sites you'll want to explore. (Rainforests and islands, anyone?) In addition to boasting a stellar marine biology department, James Cook University also offers courses in sociology, rural education issues, business, economics, geology, ecology, engineering, political science and history. In other words, pretty much everything under the sun--which you'll definitely see a lot of here!

Participants may choose to study at the James Cook University campus in Townsville (with a student population of 11,000) or the campus in Cairns (which enrolls 3,000 students). A broad range of courses is available to study abroad participants at each campus, including courses focusing on indigenous peoples and sociology, rural education issues, business and economics, geology or ecology, engineering related to tropical climates, political science and history. Many offer a uniquely Australian perspective on the topics covered. Students are expected to enroll in four courses each semester, for which they will earn 16 credits per semester.
The deadline for applying for the fall semester or academic year is March 15; the deadline for the spring semester is November 15. Prospective participants may apply online, or can download the application form online and send it via regular mail. A form completed by the Study Abroad Advisor at the applicants' home universities, as well as one academic letter of recommendation, are required; both forms can be downloaded online. Applicants must also submit an official transcript from their home universities, as well was eight full-face passport photos (some programs require more).
Tuition and fees for a semester: approximately $15,370.
Tuition and fees for the academic year: approximately $26,640.
The tuition portion of the total fee includes tuition for a full arts and most social science academic course load, pre-program advisory services, orientation, complete support services from on-site staff during the program, an International Student Identity Card (ISIC), health and accident insurance, post-program follow-up, and transcripts. The housing portion of the total fee covers shared accommodations. Students may have the option to participate in a homestay for an additional fee.
