Study Abroad Program: CIEE, CIEE Business and Culture in Barcelona

CIEE encourage college students to study business and economics in one of Spain's metropolitan city of Barcelona. Students of any Spanish Language level will study at the Escola Superior de Comerc Internacional in Barcelona. From classroom skills, to internships, and visits to local businesses, students will improve their language skills as they delve into the business culture of Spain. Participants will live with Spanish families or in residencies with other international students during their stay.

  • Students can earn up to 16 semester units during the Fall and Spring terms or 32 semester units during the Academic Year. Students will study at the CIEE Center in Barcelona, the Escola Superior de Comerc Internacional (ESCI), and Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF). Students with beginner-level Spanish skills will take business classes in English at both CIEE and ESCI. Students with intermediate Spanish skills will business classes in English and Spanish at CIEE and ESCI. Advanced students will take all of their classes in Spanish, with business classes at ESCI and UPF. Students at all levels must take at least two business courses. In following the Spanish University system, students will be responsible for their work and must take an active role in selecting outside readings to complement lectures. Classroom attendance is mandatory. Most class sizes will not exceed 35 students. All students take five courses per semester. Language courses are taught by professors experienced in Teaching Spanish as a Second Language. ESCI, UPF, and CIEE courses are taught by local university faculty and business professionals.

  • Students interested in applying for the CIEE Business and Culture Program in Barcelona, Spain can do so online (www.ciee.org) or by postal mail. The application fee is $30. Applications are accepted and processed on a rolling basis, and prospective participants are encouraged to submit applications well ahead of application deadlines. (Deadlines can be found on the CIEE web-site, as well as on the application itself.) Late applications will be considered on a space-available basis. Applicants will be informed of their status via e-mail within ten days of CIEE's receipt of their application.

    The CIEE Business and Culture Program in Barcelona is intended for college students who want to improve their language skills while taking classes in business and Spanish language and culture. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Students must also have completed 3 semesters of college-level micro- or macroeconomics, accounting, finance, management, marketing, or statistics.

    Spring 2009 (16 Weeks) Tuition: $15,100; Fall 2009 (15 Weeks) Tuition: TBA; Academic Year (31 Weeks) Tuition: $22,900. The CIEE fees for 2008–09 include an optional on-site airport meet and greet, full-time leadership and support, tuition, housing, two meals per day in the homestay option (no meals included in the residence option), orientation, organized cultural activities, local excursions, field trips, pre-departure advising, and a CIEE iNext travel card which includes insurance and other travel benefits.
