The Tropical Biology program in Costa Rica, sponsored by Duke University and the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS), provide students with an in-depth understanding of scientific ecology, complemented by a strong foundation in social, political, economic, and scientific aspects of resource management. The semester program, designed for biology majors but open to students from all disciplines, represents a unique opportunity to learn about the inner workings of field ecology under the direct guidance of experienced ecologists. Students have ample opportunity to enjoy a hands-on, participatory learning process, as well as to expand their academic and personal horizons in the context of a supportive learning environment.
Students choosing Costa Rica for their OTS experience will spend time at sites representing a diversity of forests and ecosystems. These include three biological field stations owned and operated by OTS: La Selva, Las Cruces, and Palo Verde. La Selva, one of the world’s premier tropical field
stations, encompasses 1,600 hectares of lowland rain forest alive with toucans, monkeys, and ocelots. Las Cruces is located on the Pacific slope and is an important site for research in the dynamics of forest fragmentation and restoration ecology. Palo Verde, located within the Palo Verde National Park, supports extensive marsh that is internationally
recognized habitat for nesting waterfowl, as well as lizards and crocodiles. Additional site visits may include the city of San Pedro, the Monteverde cloud forest, Nicaragua’s Indio Maiz Biological Reserve, and the oak forest of Cerro de la Muerte.

Duke University and a consortium of 63 member institutions, the Organization for Tropical Studies has been training students in the tropics for more than 45 years. In Costa Rica, courses are taught by experienced faculty and distinguished visiting professors and researchers.
Students should expect to earn 16 credits in the Costa Rica semester program by taking four courses, which are primarily field-based: Fundamentals of Tropical Biology, Environmental Science and Policy of the Tropics, Field Research in Tropical Biology, and Spanish Language and Latin American Culture (which includes a three-week homestay with a local family).

Applications are due November 1 for the Spring Semester
programs and April 1 for Fall Semester programs. Please note that OTS has a rolling admissions policy and programs may fill before their deadlines. Apply early. Application forms are available at www.ots.duke.edu.This semester program in Costa Rica is open to all undergraduate students in good academic standing who have completed one semester of college-level biology. Students should have a basic understanding of Spanish; students who are interested in building their Spanish proficiency should contact the Enrollment Management Team for suggestions regarding programs for additional Spanish language training prior to the program start date. -
Tuition and fees are approximately $18,000. Program fees include room and board, local travel, certain recreational activities, field and office equipment, and some computer services. They do not include international air travel, independent travel, nor personal effects and incidentals (i.e. souvenirs, snacks, etc.). Non-Duke students should add $40 for a one-time only, lifetime transcript fee.
OTS is committed to providing opportunities for all students interested in taking part in a program. To meet this goal, the organization has committed a substantial amount of funding to provide financial aid and scholarships for eligible students. I stayed at the OTS La Selva field station in 2003. I can't speak to the quality of the OTS program because I was there through another school's program, but I can say that the La Selva facilities are very, very comfortable!
The campus is large and lively, often filled with many students, researchers, and staff. The dorms are comfortable, clean and modern, the classrooms are new and spacious, and the grounds are well-kept and great for exploring and discovering the flora and fauna. Excellent wildlife spotting from your front porch (like howler monkeys, bullet ants, and the famous blue morpho butterflies!) or the trails that meander nearby.
